Getting Started

The Universal Viewer is an open-source project that thrives on community collaboration. There are a number of ways to get involved — a great place to start is joining our Slack channel and connecting with other community members.

A monthly community call is held on the first Thursday of each month and is open to all. These calls provide an opportunity to discuss and advance UV related topics, troubleshoot any technical issues, and connect with other users of the Universal Viewer.

Our contributing guide tells you how to run, modify and contribute to the software. Further information can be found in our online documentation.

Community Projects

Our community project programme is central to Universal Viewer development, helping to keep the project sustainable and closely aligned with user needs. Anyone is welcome to join these collaborative development efforts, regardless of technical skill. Upcoming projects are listed on our events page, and you are welcome to reach out on Slack or join a community call for more information on how you can contribute.

Steering Group

The role of the Steering Group is to provide a unified strategic direction and sustainability to the UV Community and to allocate Open Collective funds as appropriate.

The group's responsibilities include:

  • develop value proposition and a formal inter-institutional roadmap for Universal Viewer development
  • ensure sustainability to allow shared ownership and diversity
  • setting priorities for the allocation of the Open Collective funds received
  • discussing development requests received through user stories
  • discussing developments resulting from projects funded outside of the OC

Who are the Steering Group members?

Membership is currently restricted to those representatives of institutions contributing to the Open Collective UV fund but welcomes new members at all times.

Thank you to our contributors

The Universal Viewer evolves through community input and we gratefully acknowledge the contributors and institutions whose support drives the project forward. Their collaboration and commitment make ongoing development and sustainability possible.
